4 EL cops in court for armed robbery

Four K9 police constables charged with Fleet street armed robbery appear for their bail hearing at the East London Magistrate Court (today) Wednesday morning. The armed robbery took place on April 29, 2020.

The suspects are charged for Aggravated Robberies, Corruption, Kidnapping and Defeating the ends of Justice.

The officers, aged between 25 and 35, allegedly visited the said business premises to attend to an allegation of sale of alcohol.

They handcuffed the owner, searched the premises and found a large amount of money.  They extorted an undisclosed amount after threats of detention.

"A case was reported in the same business premises allegedly by eight unknown male suspects, three of whom were dressed in police uniform," said Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, Eastern Cape police spokesperson.

The foursome was interrogated and R10 000 cash money and their cellphones were seized as part of the ongoing investigations.

“The SAPS is not a habitat for criminal elements masquerading as loyal police officials. Investigation continues and more arrests are expected," said Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga.

Court is currently in session.
