BCM loses two councillors in two days to Covid 19

Buffalo City Metro recently lost two councillors in two days to the coronavirus. Funerals for Councillor Thozamile Norexe of Ward 45 and Councillor Zukiswa Mankayi of Ward 43 were broadcast live on the City's facebook page.

“The scar is too deep, and the pain is too sharp at this moment for all of us. We were still expecting to work with these comrades in pursuing development in our Metro. That they had to leave us in this manner is quite saddening. We are wishing all the best to all councillors and staff members who are battling the virus,” said City Mayor, Xola Pakati.

The City’s Acting City Manager, Andile Sihlala and Head of Directorate for Corporate Services, Bob Naidoo also tested positive to Coronavirus. Mayor Pakati added that the senior officials who tested positive join a long list of councillors and officials who have tested positive. Contact tracing has been activated by the provincial department of Health.

The City manager will temporarily be replaced by Luyanda Mbula to ensure continuity of service delivery within the administration during a critical time in the institution that is transitioning into the new financial year.

Pakati urged residents of the City to remember that the Coronavirus is real and that it continues to penetrate society causing serious misery.

“Stop gathering, keep regular hand hygiene, consistently wear masks and maintain physical distancing,” he pleaded as the City nudges close to 9 000 cases in Corona infections with 4 554 recoveries and 112 deaths.
