Bokke, champs of the world!
By Lindsay Weyer Technical assistant to the Springboks
On Sunday we were part of the World Rugby Awards where Head Coach Rassie Erasmus was deservedly named the Coach of the year, Pieter-Steph du Toit was named as World Player of the Year, and of course, the Springboks were declared the Team of the year. What a weekend!
The team is looking forward to touching down in the country with the Webb Ellis trophy this week, following our amazing performance over England on Saturday. Our first stop is Pretoria, Soweto, Durban and of course, our home town East London this coming Saturday.
The trophy will further be paraded in Port Elizabeth, the captain’s home town, and then the last stop will be Cape Town.
Shortly after we won, Prince Harry dropped by our change rooms, shared a beer with the team and said, “Congratulations, that was outstanding. I genuinely think that rugby has the ability to unite everyone around the world, and I cannot think of a nation that needs it more, than you guys right now. Well done”.
We also received a congratulatory video message from World No.3 male tennis player, Switzerland’s own Roger Federer.
“Siya, I couldn’t be any happier for you and the team, what a victory, what an amazing team effort. You spend so much time preparing and you ended up with the win. I was watching it, I was following, I was on the side of the street watching the end. I hope I can meet you soon, you are the best, well-done everybody, you guys are amazing!
