Border Craven Week team selected
Over 200 proud family members and friends attended the capping ceremony of the 2019 U/18 Border Schools Rugby Craven and Academy Weeks at Selborne College on Thursday.
The Craven Week side has four returning players from the 2018 squad, in centre and Captain, Mntungwa Mapantsela; utility forwards Raiden Masters and Jarrod Taylor and hooker Jacques Goosen. Taylor and Goosen were part of the unprecedented five Selborne boys selected for the 2018 SA Schools side, the largest contribution from one school in that year. Their selections capped off a brilliant week where Border went unbeaten against the Limpopo Blue Bulls, the Griffons and the much fancied Grey Bloem laden Free State outfit.
This year their first match up will be against the Blue Bulls on Tuesday at 13:55 and the game will be televised live on SuperSport. Their opponents for the remaining two fixtures on Thursday and Saturday will be decided upon after the results of the opening round’s matches are analysed.
The sides composition is once again dominated by Selborne boys (13), followed by Hudson Park (4), Dale (3), Queens (2) and Grens (1). Head coach and Selborne teacher, Phiwe Nomlomo guaranteed his team’s supporters that they would give their best in every game and emphasised the brotherhood in the side. “There’s no Dalian, no Selbornian, it’s just one heart”, he said. Nomlomo is for the second consecutive year ably backed by Hudson Park’s Director of Rugby, James Winstanley (Assistant Coach), Chase Morison (Conditioning Coach) and Cuma Mgijima (Technical Analyst).
Nomlomo expressed extreme gratitude to the directors of the team’s main sponsors, Patrick Arnold and Dwayne Van Tonder of Saprotex International. “Without their backing our participation would simply not be possible,” he concluded.
