Country’s best in EL Tennis fever
Over 120 professional and budding tennis players from all over the world are currently competing in the inaugural 2020 Tennis Tournament at Selborne Park, Southernwood, East London. The tournament is open to all ages, up to the 80s and runs until January 12, 2020.
MEC for Sports, Fezeka Bayeni opened the five-day tournament by playing a game clad in a full tennis kit. The sports lover MEC who also brought her daughter along said, “We see tennis as a code that is able to draw big numbers of people across all ages and therefore contribute in creating an “Active Nation”. We want to revive and develop tennis in Mdantsane and other far-flung areas. In my recent exchange mission to Lower Saxony in Germany, we proposed to have tennis included in the sport codes that are in the programme. We are looking forward to hosting German coaches over a reasonable period of time and their services will be utilised more in the townships and rural areas,” she said.
Some of the top-ranked South African players dominated the first day. The tournament ends on Sunday. Entrance is free.
