EC remembers late Education MEC, Makupula

A candlelight memorial for the late Mandla Makupula, MEC for the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDOE) was held at the Department’s offices in Bhisho on September, 23 in the presence of his family (pictured).

Makupula succumbed to cancer in 2018 after he was rushed to hospital during a work-related setting. He had been battling with the illness for some time, but he stayed on as a leader in education.

Themba Gojana, Superintendent General of the ECDOE, said, “we want to remember him for his great contribution in the transformation of education in the province. He was a man of strength, hard work, character and vision. He was the first MEC to pass away while on duty. His colleagues recall asking him to go home and come back when he was feeling better but he refused. The ECDOE wants to ensure that his name is not forgotten and his legacy continues”.

A series of events are on the cards to commemorate the life and legacy of Makupula. Eastern Cape premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane will unveil a plaque in honour of the late Makupula at the Education Leadership Institute in Stirling, East London on Wednesday. It will now be known as the Mandla Makupula Education Institute.

During the same ceremony, there will be a Memorial Lecture by Senzeni Zokwana and a Language in Education seminar on Friday.
