EL athletes to compete in World Champs

Adam de Lange, a grade 4 pupil at Selborne Primary School, Adam Brown (10), a Grade 4 pupil at Merrifield Primary School and Rodney Westgate (46) will represent South Africa at the World Biathle Championships in Florida, USA later this month.

The three qualified at the Biathle and Triathle South African Championships held in Durban in June. Brown will be competing in the U/11 age group which comprises a combination of running and swimming. World Champion Westgate will compete in the Masters' category and will look to defend his title.

The swimming will take place in a salt water marina and the run on a mixed surface; asphalt street and grass. There will be qualification heats on the morning of the race for the larger age groups, under 11 usually being one of the biggest age groups in previous years.

“I look up to Rodney as a mentor who encourages and supports me in all my training leading up to World Champs. We are very grateful to our coach, Sammy Saunders, who gives his time and expertise year after year to train and uplift the athletes of East London. Saunders trained many South African and World champions,” said de Lange.

This is the 6th World Champs event that Westgate has qualified for and a second consecutive World Champs for de Lange. Last year both athletes attended the competition in Hurghada, Egypt.
