Bonzo was a pup full of vigor and was inquisitive. Donated to the SAPS by a Port Alfred resident, he worked for six years, apprehended 49 suspects, recovered abalone worth R51 600, diving gear valued at R40 000 and recovered stolen property worth over a million.
Bonzo was withdrawn from duty this February due to being diagnosed with cancer at age 11. He was euthanized in early February. His handler purchased him to retire at home.
“This was one of the saddest days of my life. Bonzo was not just my partner, he was a hero and a true friend, I will miss him,” said an emotional Warrant Officer Neethling, his handler.
