Junior Anglers Reel in Big
Updated: Aug 6, 2019
Fifteen junior teams of three anglers, representing nine provinces arrived in East London on Monday to compete in the South African Deep Sea Angling Association, Bottom Fish Nationals, organised by Border Deep Sea Angling Association (BDSAA) and hosted at the East London Ski-Boat club.
The juniors compete in the U/16 and U/19 sections and the competition is contested over four days of fishing. The team captains did their boat draws, youngsters dressed up in their provincial blazers on the opening evening.
All four days saw very excited youngsters come in with some nice fish and loads of stories of how the big one got away. In the U/16 section, the Border team got off to a great start with young Tara Roux weighing in a cob over 12kg. They held the lead in the competition until the final day when the Natal team passed them by weighing in five species.
This being a species orientated competition, their total score for the day was multiplied by four and they pipped Border. In the U/19 section, the SADSAA Blue team weighed in a fantastic Red Steenbras on day 2, caught by local junior, Josh Olivier, of over 26kg which gave them a virtually unassailable lead and they duly won the competition. There was a great tussle for the silver and bronze medals which was only decided on the very last day. Border were very unfortunate when one of their anglers ended up in hospital after day one for an emergency appendix operation and they had to compete the last three days with only two anglers.
However, they still managed a creditable 5th out of the eight teams. The skippers put their boats into the competition voluntary, they have their own competition for medals and they achieve SADSAA skippers colours if they compete in all 4 days.
