K9 buddies add smiles
53 patients from the Home Sweet Home Frail Care Centre in St George’s Park got a special visit by K9 buddies from the SAPS K9 and Mounted units to prove that these dogs are therapeutic to people with physical and mental impairments.
The constant companionship of an animal has been shown to reduce feelings of loneliness in elderly care and nursing homes. “Misty, the Search and Rescue dog stole the hearts of the wheelchair-bound residents. Misty just instinctively knew how to bring calm and peace to the patients who are suffering from debilitating illnesses.
After showing off her skills with her handler Warrant Officer Etienne Gerber, she didn’t mind a stroke or two from her audience,” said Colonel Priscilla Naidu, spokesperson for the police.
