Knuckle City brings back cinema to the Eastern Cape

Updated: Aug 22, 2019

Knuckle City, a film that immortalises the heritage of boxing in Mdantsane township made its official East London premier last night (Tuesday) at Movies@Hemingways cinema.

Investors, boxers and members of the local film and arts industry packed the cinema to watch what is arguably one of the most provocative films of 2019. The movie will be screened in Port Elizabeth this evening.

This is the fourth feature film by Mdantsane-born and internationally acclaimed filmmaker, Jahmil Xolani Qubeka. Dissecting notions of inherited toxic masculinity and the underbelly of the fighting world, Knuckle City is a riveting exploration of the psychology of a fighter Dudu Nyakama played by Bongisa Mantsai of Scandal fame.

The movie was shot on location in Mdantsane and East London at a cost of R12 million.
