Life sentences for raping sister and two cousins
King Williams Town: A 31-year-old was given three life sentences this week for raping two of his cousins and his sister.
It is alleged that during 2011, the accused, 22 at the time, raped the two young girls, aged 9 and 11 years old. This cruelty continued until 2014, when he raped his 13-year-old sister who was brave enough and decided to tell the elders in her family about the rape.
The matter was immediately reported to the police and the docket was handed over to Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offence Unit (FCS) for further investigation.
The suspect was arrested on 7 August 2014 and faced three rape charges. Bail was opposed and he remained in custody until 2016 when he was granted bail by the High Court. He made several court appearances until the finalisation of the case.
The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt. General Liziwe Ntshinga welcomed the sentencing imposed on rape accused in the Mbizan/Tabankulu High Court on 11 August 2020.
“It is only through methodical investigation and the integrated partnership with the prosecuting authority that we, the SAPS can enhance our strategy of achieving our goal of building a society where women and children are and feel safe,” commented Lt Gen Ntshinga.
“Credit must be given to the bravery of the young girls, investigating team, prosecutors, forensic experts, and all those involved in putting together a watertight case here. At the same time, we hope that families of these girls will derive strength from the fact that the person inflicted such painful experience in their lives, has been sent to jail for a very long time,” she concluded.
