Metro to continue with disinfection of public areas

The Buffalo City Municipality Metro will continue with its disinfection and decontamination of high-risk areas that have a high volume of traffic and dwellers such as informal settlements, taxi ranks, shopping centres and hospitals. On Friday, Mayor Xola Pakati joined the Greed Deeds team in King Williams Town cleaning the streets and the taxi rank.

“We joined the Green Deeds team on their regular service delivery Fridays. This clean-up is very important, especially during the Covid-19 outbreak. The congestion at the rank is not as high as during normal times, so we are using this chance to disinfect properly in order to protect the rank users who are part of essential services,” said Pakati.

The clean-up involves street sweeping, grass cutting, weed picking, clearing of illegal dumps, bush clearing and gutter clearing. The two-week programme was meant to be concluded on Friday but will continue after the Metro received requests from various government departments to have their working space disinfected.

“We received a request from the South African Police Services and other departments, so we will evaluate the impact of the programme and identify many other areas to focus on in order to reduce the levels of infection,” said Samkelo Ngwenya, spokesperson for the Metro.

The disinfection and decontamination have already been conducted in public areas such as East London, Duncan Village, Mdantsane, King Williams Town and Bhisho. This will serve to neutralize and remove dangerous substances and germs from areas, objects and people.
