East Londoners have joined in on the search and prayers for missing local teen Uyinene Rwetyana (19). Uyinene is a first-year BA Film and Media studies student at the University of Cape Town. She was last seen at the Claremont Post Office on Saturday at midday in Cape Town.
East London scholars gathered at Nahoon Beach on Wednesday afternoon to say a prayer (see video). A second meeting will be held at 6pm tonight (Wednesday) at the St Albans Anglican Church in Vincent.
The family has hired a private investigator to assist the police find their daughter. Social media has been buzzing with fake accounts of what may have happened to this girl. Noel Pratten, the PI has assured that none of these are true, and the search for the teen continues.
Her family is currently in Cape Town to actively help search for Uyinene and has asked the public for assistance in the matter. A night vigil will also be held in Cape Town at the UCT Jammie Plaza tomorrow at 7pm. Cape Town police have requested that anyone with information must contact their nearest police station.
Students from the University of Witswatersrand in Gauteng held prayer meetings in support of the family. A hashtag has been created #bringnenehome in order to boost an online media campaign to find Uyinene.
The University of Cape Town said in a statement, “UCT Campus Protection Services (CPS) is working together with the SAPS and other relevant authorities to ensure that the missing student is found. We are in contact with the family and keeping them in our thoughts during this period,”.
