New hockey field developed

A hockey field situated in Bunker’s Hill, right next to the Astro Turf, has not been maintained for years, leading to its current dire state. However, Border Hockey Association chairperson, Charles Masfen, has taken the initiative to revitalise the field back to its former glory.

The project started with the leveling of the grounds. Buco Park provided a lawn mower and other material to assist make the process less costly. The now completed field can be used by schools as a halfway meeting point.

“Schools that do not have sports field can also use this field as it is not attached to any particular school. Schools no longer have to cancel their fixtures because of lack of a proper public facilities in East London,” said Masfen.

His next plan is to get the area fenced, making it safe and secure. He is optimistic that if used efficiently, national sportsman and women could be born from this field. He hopes that this initiative will inspire more children to get into sport, and not just hockey.

“We want to see more children participate in sport because it is a good way for them to explore their talents and keep them off the streets,” he said.
