Second EL prison official tests positive
One of the 32 East London Prison officials who were in contact with the first Covid-19 case for South African prisons has tested positive.
The official who had been placed in isolation a week ago used a private laboratory prior to the official prison mass testing that started on Wednesday by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in Westbank, East London.
So far 73 officials have been tested, including the 32 that were placed in isolation. Furthermore, inmates at the prison were screened and 31 were tested. The process is ongoing.
"Prevention measures are intensified and testing will continue in all correctional centres to avert the transmission of the virus," said Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Service.
