Silver for Maddy at XCO Nationals
The 2020 SA MTB XCO National Championship was held at Coetzenburg, Stellenbosch on Saturday.
It was a very different experience for all athletes with no spectators permitted on the track while competitors were from U/17 and older. This same course hosted a UCI World Cup Race in 2018 and the technical sections were nothing short of UCI standards.
Friday's practice session was super wet, muddy, and slippery. Luckily the Cape Town wind had dried the track by race day. With only three Eastern Cape Riders at the event, we were hoping for the best.
Madison 'Maddy' Mann had a tough start and then a bump with one of her competitors on the first hill (it’s really steep). With true grit and determination, Maddy fought her way back from the last place to overtake the competition on a steep rocky climb.
From this point onwards there was no stopping our local Champ.
Well done Madison, a Silver medal places you as the second-fastest South African on a Mountain Bike in the Youth Women Category (U/17).
You make East London very proud. Her future goals include winning the SA Champs and the Herald Cycle Tour. Go Maddy go!
