The pride of Komani

Ezibeleni team, Amavaravara FC (Pathfinders) was one of two Eastern Cape clubs featuring in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup, alongside Chippa United.

Ezibeleni Football Club, Amavaravara FC made it to the last 16 of the coveted Nedbank Cup only to be beaten 2-0 by Black Leopards in Thoyandou last Friday. It was not all tears for the community of Komani who all rallied behind the men in red, expressing incredible pride that the team went as far as it did. The outfit, which plays in the ABC Motsepe League, can confidently be called the pride of Komani.

“On behalf of the team, technical staff and management I would like to thank everyone who has supported us through our Nedbank Cup journey. It has been amazing and we couldn’t have asked for more from you guys. It was a learning curve for most of us, may God bless our Hustle and we are not going to stop. #ForeverAmavarara #SiyakhalaIsteki,” said Odwa Penxa speaking on behalf of the team, coach Mzunani Mgwigwi and captain Nkosomzi Mbenyana.

A resident of Ezibeleni, Buti Nkonki shared the same sentiments, adding that they are proud of their boys.

“You made us very proud boys. Admittedly the score line is not the true reflection of the game. You made them sweat indeed. Our goalkeeper, Mini kept us in the game until the end. Rise up and pick your spear and fight side by side. We've gained from this loss, now go back to the drawing board and think about qualifying for the playoffs. The scorpions! Nomadukudwana! Vararas!"

The team received a generous financial contribution for the journey from the Chris Hani District municipality in order for them to represent the District.“They travelled miles away from home representing all of us. Amavarara FC might be out of the Nedbank Cup, but one thing remains for sure, they are our boys and we are still proud of them,” was the message from the District.

The team last year made history when they became the first team from the district and the region to qualify for the South African Nedbank Cup last 32 draw, which features all the big guns of the Premier Soccer League.

Amavaravara loosely translated means pathfinders or pioneers. Amavara thrashed Super Eagles in Mdantsane in order qualify for a spot in the last 16.
