Veteran athlete dies from heart attack during Buffs Marathon
MEC for Sports in the province, Fezeka Bayeni paid special tribute to a 70-year-old Seventh Day Adventist club athlete who collapsed and died from a heart attack during the Buffs Marathon on Sunday.
The runner was one of over a thousand who took part in the half marathon (21km). Marathon organiser Craig Nelson confirmed that the athlete, who cannot be named as yet, died on the scene at the Lion Park, near Stutterheim. Bayeni, who knows the runner personally, confirmed that the athlete was a running legend, dedicated runner, disciplinarian, mentor to many up and coming runners.
“We are indeed saddened and equally shocked by the unexpected passing of such a dedicated, sport-loving legend of the Eastern Cape. We would like to take this time as well and pass heartfelt condolences to the family and the extension thereof. Our road running competitions will never be the same,” she said.
The Buffs Marathon is on its 47th year and it is used as a qualifier for both the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons.
