Yiba, first EC Idol
King William’s Town’s Luyolo Yiba (24) made history on Sunday when he became the first South African Idols winner from the Eastern Cape. Residents from Club View, where Yiba comes from, watched the finale together via a public viewing screening. The King Willies blasted his debut single, "Sunshine through the Rain" at the town’s main road, Alexandra Road as part of the after the show party.
Yiba beat thousands of hopefuls to win a brand-new vehicle, R700 000 cash prize, R100 000 clothing voucher, R300 000 from Old Mutual, a recording deal with a South African label, music equipment worth R80 000, amongst other prizes. Social media picked up from the joyous mood of the Springboks when people offered to assist anyone who wanted to vote.
The Walter Sisulu University SRC in East London visited student residents where they assisted students in voting for one of their own graduates. A Facebook post by Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane read, “Congratulations young man, well done Luyolo for winning @Idols SA. Huntshu Nyana Womgquba!”
