Zozibini, Queen of the Universe!
The Eastern Cape’s Zozibini ‘Mamtolo’ Tunzi was crowned as the 68th Miss Universe on Sunday, December 8 at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, USA.
Tunzi was crowned as Miss South Africa 2019 and is the third South African to win the Miss Universe crown. The first was Margaret Gardiner in 1978, followed by Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in 2017.
She is also the first Miss Universe to wear the brand-new ‘Power of Unity’ crown which is said to be worth R73 million.
“May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine. The most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It is something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time. Not because we do not want to, but because of what society has labelled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and we should be given every opportunity. Take up space,” said the woman who has stolen hearts all over the world with her boldness and unique look.
She added, “I came into this competition with my natural hair as a symbol of my firm belief in fair representation. I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me — with my kind of skin and my kind of hair — was never considered to be beautiful. I think it is time that that stops today.”
